DUBAI EXPO MIRRORBOX.
Tasked as lead animator to create an abstract city of pavillions to promote the Expo 2020 - the largest event ever staged in the Arab World. Following the journey of a falcon through the different districts, this one minute piece uses deep blacks and vibrant colour to create a beautiful spectacle for the millions of annual visitors of Dubai Airport.
THE MIRRORBOX CANVAS.
32 curved OLED screens, joined together, all set deep within a mirrored frame to extend the visual even further. This huge installation was centred in the most travelled area of Dubai Airport for a year, exposed to millions of travellers, to draw the attention of the Dubai Expo 2020.
CREATING AN ABSTRACT PAVILION CITY.
The main objective of this animated piece was to give a teaser to the huge petal shaped city that the people of Dubai have actually built for the Dubai Expo 2020, the first World’s Fair fully open to the public. Being a potentially mammoth task to convey this city with all its buildings and pavilions, we needed to abstracify it. Though not part of the concept and design development, I was lead animator on the second half of the project: Creation, sequencing, layout, animation, and final execution.
The falcon is the national bird of the UAE and a symbol of Dubai and its heritage, so featured as our main protagonist, guiding us through the different districts of the Expo, on its way to the showstopping central Al Wasl Plaza at the end. Using OLED screens, it was important for the client to showcase the deep, rich blacks the screens were capable of showing. Expressing these blacks with such vivid colours really helped create a bold and uniquely strong visual language that helped to capture the attention of the millions of annual visitors to Dubai Airport.
THE FINAL PIECE.
