THE NBC-UNIVERSAL 2023 UPFRONTS SHOW

Working with Hello Charlie as the principal creative agency, I worked in producing elegant backdrops for the multitude of screens at NBC-Universal’s annual Upfronts 2023. This all-singing-all- dancing show is put on annually by the USA’s largest TV Network, NBC, combined with Universal films, as a showcase of the incredible TV and films they have hitting our screens in the coming year.

THE CONCEPT

This year the client's strategy was to embrace the beautiful curvature of Radio City's Music Hall. Working with an impressive canvas of 9 large curved screens, I was challenged with developing curved, arcing, repeating visuals that worked in harmony with the unusual shape of the set.

To work with the hemispherical canvas, elegance was found in a repeating curvature motif and used as our main visual language throughout the show. For variety throughout, I developed a vast range of shapes and colours that were worked into the show's structure.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Golden warm hues were established early on as a key theme of the graphics. But on the right you can see how much my material choices developed over time, concluding that the beauty should be in shape, light and shadow, best achieved by keeping the texturing soft and simplified.

TAKING CENTRE STAGE

The complex moving and ever adapting 9-screen set up made for a complex but exciting canvas to work with and created the level of show-stopping prestige that was required for a bluechip broadcaster like NBC.
